If you have a significant amount of any cryptocurrency to your name storing them in a hardware wallet is one of the most secure and perhaps best way to store them. Do not store your cryptocurrency stash on a software wallet or even worse an online wallet. Online wallets can get hacked and so can your computer. The only acceptable scenario is to store some spending money on a software wallet or mobile wallet as long as you make sure the software/mobile wallet encrypts your private keys and that you setup strong password protection on such wallets.
Having said all that, it is my strong opinion that an extremely secure paper wallet or hardware wallet is the way to go if you want your bitcoin to remain yours. There are now quite a few cryptocurrency hardware wallets out there. I haven’t yet tried them all but the two that I use have become very dear to me. I think the best (and likely most popular) hardware wallets at the moment are:
1: Trezor (by SatoshiLabs)
The Trezor is the first bitcoin/cryptocurrency wallet to be available for consumer purchase. It is my favorite at the moment. The hardware itself is well built and the initial first setup process is very simple and easy to follow. Their wallet is web based (works in any browser) and very easy to use. Simple is beautiful! Being web based does not diminish its security as your private keys always remain on the Trezor wallet itself. The latest model of their Trezor wallet the Trezor Model T features a beautiful color screen and support for a massive variety of cryptocurrencies. 2: Ledger
Ledger is a French based company that came second after Trezor into the hardware wallet industry. Their Ledger Nano S has become wildly popular. Pictured above is their new Ledger Nano X variant which is due to be launched very soon. I currently own a Nano S and I’ve been happy with it, but I must admit I prefer the user experience the Trezor provides. The best way to see which hardware wallet you like best is of course to try it yourself! The Ledger Nano X follows the same basic user interaction methods as the Nano S but brings support for a much larger collection of cryptocurrencies thanks to increased on-board storage and it also ads bluetooth support so you can use it with your mobile phone – a pretty neat feature! The Nano X is now available for pre-order. Click here to check it out or to pre-order.
If you’re going to order one of these hardware wallets, I STRONGLY suggest you also get one of these:
